Two denominators — read them separately. The 51.9% is measured against the full 2,499-record database, which includes adjacent-department petition signers, institutional entries, FSJP chapter entries, and petition-level records. The 39.5% is measured against the 1,014 faculty confirmed by name as teaching primarily in Jewish, Israel, Hebrew, or Holocaust studies. The full-field rate runs higher because the non-core records enter the database largely through petition and institutional sources rather than confirmed individual teaching appointments.
How the Data Was Built
Faculty rosters were compiled from publicly available university websites during July and August 2026, covering every institutional member of the Association for Jewish Studies (70+), every US center listed by the Association for Israel Studies (~30), and additional degree-granting programs. Each faculty member was cross-referenced against nine documented petition campaigns using university affiliation, department, academic title, and full name. The study explicitly excludes support for a two-state solution, criticism of specific Israeli government policies, opposition to settlement expansion, and calls for accountability regarding civilian casualties. What the 2,499 records represent
The audit database is not a roster of 2,499 individual Jewish Studies professors. It holds 2,499 records across five categories: (1) named faculty in dedicated Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, Hebrew, and Holocaust Studies programs; (2) individual faculty in adjacent departments — history, religion, Middle East and Near Eastern studies, political science, and others — who signed one or more of the nine documented petitions; (3) institutional-level entries for programs where individual names could not be confirmed; (4) FSJP (Faculty for Justice in Palestine) chapter-level entries; and (5) petition-level aggregate records.
The 1,014 figure is the subset of category (1) — faculty confirmed by name as teaching primarily in Jewish, Israel, Hebrew, or Holocaust studies. Read the 51.9% (1,298 of 2,499) as the signal rate across the entire audited field, and the 39.5% (401 of 1,014) as the rate among core Jewish Studies teaching faculty specifically.
