Shashua Exits AI21 — And Israel's Foundation-Model Chapter Turns

Amnon Shashua steps down from AI21 Labs after nine years — the founder-level confirmation that Israel's standalone LLM era has closed and Maestro is next.
Amnon Shashua has informed AI21 Labs he is stepping down from both the company and its board — nine years after co-founding the Tel Aviv foundation-model builder that put Israeli large language models on the global map. Calcalist broke the news Tuesday, July 7.
The move follows a brutal two months. In May, AI21 cut its workforce from roughly 180 employees to about 70 — a 61% reduction — after acquisition talks with Amsterdam-listed AI cloud company Nebius collapsed. The company terminated standalone model sales, refocused entirely on Maestro (its AI agent optimization platform), and signed Wix and Nebius as anchor Maestro customers under contracts described as worth tens of millions of dollars.
Shashua's departure is the punctuation on that reset.
The founder economics behind the exit
Shashua co-founded AI21 in November 2017 with Yoav Shoham, the Stanford AI professor, and Ori Goshen, who serves as CEO. He is also the founder of Mobileye — the Jerusalem-headquartered autonomous-driving company Intel acquired in 2017 for $15.3 billion and relisted on Nasdaq in 2022. He founded OrCam. He founded Mentee Robotics. He holds the Sachs chair in computer science at Hebrew University.
AI21 was the pure-play LLM bet inside that portfolio. Jurassic-1, released in August 2021, was the first publicly available LLM outside the United States. Jamba — the Mamba-Transformer hybrid — followed. Wordtune reached roughly ten million users. The company raised about $336 million, most recently at a $1.4 billion valuation in a 2023 Series C led by Google and Nvidia.
The Mobileye founder does not walk away from a company he co-founded and capitalized without a clear read on where the value now sits.
What the exit signals
Three things.
First — the standalone LLM business, as a commercial category, is over for players below the hyperscaler tier. AI21 already said this out loud in May when it stopped selling models. "Developments in the AI field have forced us to reexamine the company's operations from end to end," the company told employees at the time. Shashua leaving is the founder-level confirmation. The economics do not close for a $336 million-raised Israeli company competing against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta on foundation model training runs. Maestro — a narrower agent-orchestration layer where AI21 holds real technical differentiation — is the survivable business. The 110-person layoff was the operational reset. The founder exit is the strategic one.
Second — the Nebius track was a hyperscaler-adjacent path, not a hyperscaler-owned one. AI21 has been building the template for an Israeli foundation-model company independent of any single US cloud. When the Nebius acquisition collapsed and became a commercial partnership instead, that template held. Shashua leaving does not undo it. Goshen and Shoham remain. The Maestro contract book is signed.
Third — Shashua's attention concentrates. Mobileye is public and under quarterly pressure from a robotaxi cohort — Waymo, Tesla, Zoox, Chinese autonomous fleets — that did not exist at Mobileye's 2022 relisting. OrCam operates in a category ChatGPT's native vision capabilities have quietly encroached on. Mentee Robotics is early-stage. The founder behind three Israeli computer-vision franchises is not retiring — he is reallocating.
Mobileye read-through
Mobileye Global trades on Nasdaq under MBLY. The 2022 relisting came in at a $17 billion valuation against Intel's initial $50 billion target — a gap that has defined the equity story ever since.
If Shashua is concentrating attention on Mobileye rather than parceling it across AI21, that is a signal for MBLY holders. Nothing in the AI21 disclosure suggests otherwise. Ziv Aviram — Mobileye's operating co-founder and Shashua's partner across OrCam and Greeneye — remains the through-line.
The Israeli LLM question
AI21 held the flagship position in Israeli foundation-model building for nine years. The pivot to Maestro plus the founder exit leaves a category opening. The Israeli AI stack still runs deep — Lightricks in consumer creative, D-ID in synthetic media, roughly $15.6 billion raised across Israeli AI in 2025, an AWS study published this week ranking Israel first globally in the share of startups that are AI-native. The foundation-model tier specifically is now thinner.
Hebrew-first LLM building remains open ground. AI21 was Hebrew-capable, not Hebrew-first. Whoever closes that gap inherits a category.
The next move
Shashua has not publicly named a next venture. AI21 has not commented on the record beyond confirming the news to Calcalist. Expect the following in order: a board reshuffle inside AI21, a Mobileye investor day framing the concentration, and — within twelve months — a new Shashua vehicle in the applied AI stack. His track record does not permit the reading that he is done.
Israel's foundation-model chapter does not close. It turns.
Frequently asked questions
When did Amnon Shashua co-found AI21 Labs?
November 2017, alongside Yoav Shoham and Ori Goshen. He has served on the board since founding.
Why is Shashua leaving now?
AI21 completed a strategic reset in May 2026 — a workforce cut of more than 60%, an exit from standalone model sales, and a refocus on the Maestro agent platform. Shashua's departure follows that pivot rather than triggering it.
Does this affect Mobileye?
Not directly. Mobileye Global (Nasdaq: MBLY) is a separately public company. A concentration of Shashua's attention toward Mobileye is a plausible read.
Who runs AI21 now?
Ori Goshen remains CEO. Yoav Shoham remains co-founder and product leader.
What is Maestro?
AI21's AI agent optimization platform — the surviving product after the May 2026 reset. Wix and Nebius are among the anchor customers.
