NFX: Gigi Levy-Weiss and the Israeli Network-Effects Fund Behind Lemonade and Riskified

NFX is the cross-border network-effects venture fund co-founded by Gigi Levy-Weiss, James Currier, and Pete Flint in 2015. Portfolio includes Lemonade, Riskified, and Trax. Levy-Weiss anchors the Israeli side.

NFX is the cross-border venture fund co-founded in 2015 by James Currier, Pete Flint, and Gigi Levy-Weiss, built explicitly around the thesis that network-effects businesses produce the majority of venture returns. Levy-Weiss, the former CEO of Playtika, anchors the Israeli side of the platform from Tel Aviv. NFX's Israeli portfolio includes Lemonade (NYSE: LMND), Riskified (NYSE: RSKD), and Trax — three of the highest-visibility Israeli company-building outcomes of the last decade. The fund operates on a seed-and-Series-A model with proprietary founder tooling and one of the most publicly documented investment methodologies in venture.

What NFX does

NFX invests at seed and Series A, with a stated preference for pre-launch and pre-revenue companies where network effects are architecturally possible from day one. The fund publishes a taxonomy of sixteen network-effect types — direct, two-sided, data, tech-performance, social, platform, marketplace, and adjacent variants — that it uses as its screening framework. Founders pitch against the taxonomy. Companies that cannot map to at least one network-effect type are declined regardless of category or team.

The model is deliberately narrower than a generalist seed fund. NFX writes fewer checks per fund than firms of comparable size and concentrates ownership in companies where the network-effect thesis can compound. The result has been an unusually high concentration of the fund's returns in a small number of category leaders.

Founders

James Currier is the primary architect of the NFX network-effects framework. A serial founder and investor, he wrote much of the public NFX Essays library that codified the taxonomy. Pete Flint is the co-founder of Trulia (IPO 2012, acquired by Zillow 2015 for $3.5B). Gigi Levy-Weiss is the Israeli-based General Partner. He served as CEO of Playtika, the Herzliya-headquartered social casino operator later sold to a Chinese consortium for $4.4B and publicly listed on NASDAQ. Before Playtika he built and exited 888 Holdings' gaming operations. His pattern-recognition on consumer network businesses out of Israel is central to the fund's Israeli sourcing.

Portfolio: the Israeli names

Lemonade (NYSE: LMND) — Insurtech founded by Daniel Schreiber and Shai Wininger. NFX participated in the earliest institutional rounds. IPO 2020. Israeli headquarters, US customer market.

Riskified (NYSE: RSKD) — E-commerce fraud prevention founded by Eido Gal and Assaf Feldman. NFX early investor. IPO 2021 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Trax — Retail computer-vision platform. Israeli founders, Singapore headquarters. NFX in early rounds. One of the more valuable Israeli-founded private companies in the retail-tech vertical.

Anima, Hour One, and other Israeli-founder companies span NFX's later vintages.

Position in the Israeli venture stack

NFX sits in a specific slot that no purely Israeli fund occupies. It is a US-headquartered fund with a full Israeli GP, an explicit network-effects methodology, and cross-border sourcing that pulls Israeli founders into the SF-anchored consumer and marketplace ecosystem earlier than a purely Israeli-institutional fund would. Where Aleph and Pitango compete for the same Israeli founders on domestic terms, NFX competes by offering a bridge into the US network-effects investor network from day one.

The fund's public essay library — the NFX Essays — has become a standard reference document inside Israeli founder circles. Levy-Weiss's LP position at Playtika and his broader Israeli consumer-internet operator profile give the fund a proprietary channel into founders coming out of the gaming, marketplace, and consumer-fintech clusters.
