StarkWare and the ZK Stack

StarkWare is the most institutionally significant Israeli company in the crypto layer. Its zero-knowledge proof technology powers the most widely-used scaling stack for Ethereum.

The institution

StarkWare Industries, founded in Netanya in 2018 by Eli Ben-Sasson, Uri Kolodny, Alessandro Chiesa, and Michael Riabzev, is the principal commercial actor inside the zero-knowledge (ZK) proof category. Its core technology — STARK (Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge) proofs — is the underlying cryptographic primitive for two of the most heavily-used Ethereum scaling solutions: StarkEx and StarkNet.

What it actually does

StarkEx is the validity-proof rollup powering dYdX (until its 2023 migration), Sorare, Immutable X, and other applications that handle very large transaction volumes off the Ethereum base layer. StarkNet is a general-purpose, permissionless ZK rollup with its own Cairo programming language. Combined, the two systems have processed billions of transactions and several hundred billion dollars in transaction value to date.

The capital and valuation history

StarkWare has raised in excess of USD 250 million across funding rounds led by Paradigm, Sequoia, and Founders Fund among others. Its most recent disclosed primary-round valuation (2022) placed it at approximately USD 8 billion, making it one of the highest-valued Israeli-headquartered companies in any category at that point in the cycle. Subsequent rounds and the secondary market have re-priced as the broader crypto cycle has reset.

Why this matters

StarkWare is what makes the Israeli crypto founder cast institutionally significant rather than retail-trade colour. Combined with Fireblocks on the custody side, it is the empirical answer to the question "what does Israel actually produce in the digital-assets category". The answer is core cryptographic infrastructure used by the rest of the industry.
