Technology Transfer Company

A Technology Transfer Company describes the institutional entity affiliated with a major research university or academic medical center responsible for commercializing intellectual property generated by university or hospital research activity.

The Israeli technology-transfer architecture is unusually mature relative to most international academic research environments. Major Israeli technology-transfer organizations include:

— Yeda Research and Development Company (Weizmann Institute of Science) — established 1959, one of the oldest academic technology-transfer organizations globally — Yissum Research Development Company (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) — Ramot at Tel Aviv University — T3 (Technion Technology Transfer) — Carmel Haifa University Economic Corporation (Haifa University) — Hadasit (Hadassah Medical Organization) — BGN Technologies (Ben-Gurion University) — Ariel University Technology Transfer

The Israeli technology-transfer architecture has produced substantial commercial activity over the past several decades. Major commercialization successes attributed to Israeli academic technology-transfer activity include the original Mobileye automotive vision technology (with academic Hebrew University origins), the Doxil (originally Doxil/Caelyx) liposomal doxorubicin formulation, the Azilect (rasagiline) Parkinson's disease drug from Yeda research, and a broader set of significant commercializations.

The technology-transfer organizations interface with the Israeli VC and growth-equity sector (covered in The Olam's Venture cluster), with the broader Israeli R&D-policy architecture under the Israel Innovation Authority, and with international research-partnership activity.

Hospital-affiliated technology-transfer organizations (Hadasit for Hadassah; technology-transfer activity within Sheba ARC; equivalent activity at other major Israeli hospitals) commercialize hospital-generated intellectual property alongside the broader academic technology-transfer system.
