SFO

A Single-Family Office (SFO) is a private institutional entity established to manage the financial, operational, philanthropic, and broader family-affairs activity of one UHNW family. The structure typically operates with dedicated staff, dedicated infrastructure, and customized institutional architecture serving the specific family's principal positions.

SFO operations typically span:

— Investment management (across public-market positions, private-equity and venture-capital fund commitments, direct private-company positions, real estate, and adjacent asset categories) — Tax and legal coordination across multiple jurisdictions — Trust and estate administration — Philanthropic activity coordination — Family-governance activity (family councils, next-generation engagement, succession planning) — Operational support for family business activity, family residences, family aircraft, and the broader family operational infrastructure

For Jewish UHNW families specifically, SFO architecture frequently operates across multiple jurisdictions simultaneously. A typical pattern combines an onshore SFO base (US, UK, Israel, or Switzerland depending on principal residence) with Swiss private-banking interfaces, Israeli banking interfaces for principals with Israeli activity, and US banking interfaces for principals with US activity.

The 2026 aliyah tax reform window has produced substantial restructuring of cross-border SFO architecture for principals making aliyah. Pre-aliyah, the SFO architecture is frequently restructured to optimize the post-aliyah Israeli tax-residency position and the broader cross-jurisdictional structure. The advisory expansion supporting this restructuring activity is covered at /family-office-migration/.

SFOs operate at substantial scale — minimum economic threshold for full SFO operation typically begins around $250 million-$500 million in family assets, with larger SFOs operating across $5+ billion family asset bases.
