National umbrella for ~145 local Jewish federations across the US and Canada. Aggregate annual campaign exceeds $1B. The central diaspora-to-Israel philanthropy aggregator.
JFNA was formed in 2009 through the merger of the United Jewish Communities (UJC) and the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) federation infrastructure. The organization coordinates the federated network, operates the overseas allocation channel that routes US federation proceeds to The Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), and runs the General Assembly — the annual major institutional gathering of federation leadership.
The federation tier is anchored by UJA-Federation of New York (the largest single local federation by campaign), Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, and Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. JFNA also coordinates major-emergency campaign architecture — the post-October 7 emergency campaign across 2023-2024 was the largest recent activation of that infrastructure.
