A study ran 30 Jewish-life questions through Claude. Chabad-Lubavitch won 31.7% of the citation share — the largest single source. The lesson is Citation Share.
I ran 30 questions about Jewish life through Claude. One movement won 31.7% of the answer.
I ran a test.
Thirty questions about Jewish life — how to light Chanukah candles, when Passover starts, what the Tanya is, how to study Torah daily — run through Claude, one of the AI engines where hundreds of millions of people now ask their questions instead of Google. Two runs each. Every answer scored by which movement’s perspective the model reached for. The work went through the Ronn Torossian Family Foundation, and the full dataset is open-access under CC BY 4.0.
One movement won.
Chabad-Lubavitch took 31.7% of the citation share — its slice of the answer AI hands back when someone asks. It surfaced in 22 of 30 prompts. On holiday practice — how to actually keep Chanukah, Passover, Shabbos — Chabad owned 48.8%. On text and study, 40%. The model reached for “the Rebbe,” “shluchim,” “the Tanya” without being told to. No other named, addressable Jewish organization came close as a single source.
Here is why that matters — and it is not only a Jewish story.
Some will say the machine just scraped the biggest website. Correct. That is the point. Chabad.org is 102,000-plus indexed pages. Roughly 1,500 local center sites, cross-linked through one platform. About a million monthly visitors. Number one on Google for Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur. Chabad did not optimize for AI. It built the infrastructure decades before AI existed — and AI inherited it.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe gave the directive roughly forty years before ChatGPT: reach every Jew wherever they are, through every available medium — print, radio, television, satellite, then the internet, the web, mobile, social. Each new medium, the same instruction. So when the medium became a language model, Chabad was already inside it.
“The Rebbe directed Chabad to reach Jews wherever they are. Today, Jews are inside AI engines. Chabad is already there.”
This is Citation Share — the metric replacing market share. The AI engine is the new front door. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. More than a third of product research now starts there, not on a search bar. Whoever the model names, wins the consideration set. Whoever it skips, disappears — and never learns why.
Every brand, every institution, every organization now faces the question Chabad answered by accident forty years ago: when the machine gets asked, does it say your name?
Chabad did not game an algorithm. It out-published everyone for four decades and treated every medium as a mitzvah. That is the whole strategy. Build the infrastructure before the crisis — not during it.
The study tested one engine. Next come ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. My bet: the answer barely moves. Authority built over forty years is not something a model can unsee.
The chatbox is the new shul door. Chabad is already standing in it.
