Unit 81 is an elite technology unit of the Israel Defense Forces' Intelligence Directorate, tasked with designing and building bespoke technological systems for special operations — often at the intersection of hardware, sensors, and covert electronics. Less publicly known than Unit 8200 or the Talpiot program, Unit 81 has an outsized reputation inside the ecosystem as an incubator of deep-tech founders, with alumni behind companies across semiconductors, medical devices, and defense-tech. It is repeatedly cited as one of the most concentrated sources of hardware and multidisciplinary engineering talent in the Israeli economy.
