Iron Dome (Kipat Barzel) is the Israeli short-range air-defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 to 70 kilometers. The system was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with mPrest providing the command-and-control software, and was declared operational in March 2011. It has been the centerpiece of Israeli civilian air defense across multiple operational engagements since.
Why it matters. Iron Dome is the most globally recognized Israeli defense system and one of Rafael's most commercially significant export programs. The U.S. Army has procured Iron Dome batteries; several allied countries operate or have ordered the system. Iron Dome underpins Israel's broader multi-layered air-defense architecture, alongside David's Sling (medium range) and the Arrow series (long range and exo-atmospheric).
