The technology: why ReRAM replaces Flash below 28nm

Embedded Flash memory — the non-volatile storage built into microcontrollers, automotive chips, and IoT devices — breaks down below approximately 28 nanometers. The physics of charge-trap storage degrade at smaller process nodes, requiring increasingly expensive workarounds. Below 22nm, embedded Flash is effectively unscalable. That is where ReRAM enters.

Resistive RAM stores data by switching a thin oxide film between high-resistance and low-resistance states — a fundamentally different mechanism from the charge-storage approach of Flash. The advantages at advanced nodes are structural: lower power consumption, faster read and write speeds, higher endurance (write cycles), simpler CMOS-compatible fabrication, and — critically — the ability to scale below 22nm where Flash cannot follow. TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, has been converting its embedded non-volatile memory roadmap from MRAM (Magnetoresistive RAM) to ReRAM. CEO Coby Hanoch told eeNews Europe that out of six TSMC projects, five are now ReRAM. GlobalFoundries customers are making the same switch.

Weebit's ReRAM IP originated from research at France's CEA-Leti, one of Europe's leading semiconductor research institutes. Weebit licensed the foundational technology from Leti and has since developed it into a commercially licensable IP platform qualified at 40nm, 28nm, and 22nm, with a roadmap below 20nm.

The licensing model and the royalty runway

Weebit is a fabless semiconductor IP company. It does not manufacture chips. It licenses its ReRAM IP to chipmakers who integrate the memory into their own products. Revenue comes in three stages: upfront licensing fees, non-recurring engineering (NRE) fees during integration and qualification, and — once customer chips reach volume production — per-unit royalties. The first two stages are where Weebit sits today. The third is the prize.

The licensing sequence since 2025 has been rapid. Onsemi signed in January 2025 — the first Tier-1 licensee — integrating Weebit ReRAM into its Treo platform for automotive and industrial applications. Texas Instruments signed in December 2025, licensing ReRAM for advanced embedded processing nodes with AEC-Q100 automotive qualification at 150°C. First customer tape-outs — the point where chips containing Weebit ReRAM enter production test — are targeting late 2026, with Overlord Labs at DB HiTek among the first to tape out.

Revenue has grown accordingly. H1 FY26 revenue reached A$5.6 million — an eightfold increase over the same period a year earlier. FY26 guidance has been upgraded twice: from A$10 million to A$12 million after the strong first half, then to A$13.5 million in July 2026 as existing customer projects expanded. This is still licensing and engineering revenue, not royalties. The royalty phase — the point where the model compounds — begins only when customer chips reach volume production, likely in 2027 or 2028.

Coby Hanoch joined Weebit as CEO in October 2017, when the company was a pre-revenue R&D operation. Born in Jerusalem in 1960, Hanoch holds a BSc in Systems Design from the Technion.
