Vertical AI Agent
An AI software system designed to autonomously execute the workflow of a specific job function — sales, support, legal, engineering — rather than serving as a general-purpose chat assistant. The commercial layer above general-purpose foundation models.
A Vertical AI Agent is an AI-powered software system designed to autonomously execute the workflow of a specific job function or industry — sales development, customer support, legal due diligence, software engineering, healthcare scribing — rather than serving as a general-purpose chat assistant.
Vertical agents are the commercial layer above general-purpose foundation models. The thesis: a domain-specialized agent with deep integration into the software stack of one job category captures more economic value than a general-purpose chatbot, because it replaces a fraction of a fully-loaded human salary rather than competing for $20/month consumer subscription revenue.
Israel produced an early wave of vertical-agent companies including Wonderful (customer support), Oasis (identity), Anima (autonomous sales engineering), and ZyG, alongside US players Sierra, Decagon, 11x, Cresta, Harvey (legal), and Glean. The category is one of the highest-growth software segments of the post-ChatGPT cycle.
