Sheba functions as Israel's de facto national hospital for medical diplomacy — receiving patients from the Palestinian Authority, neighboring countries, and global referral networks. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheba was the first hospital outside the United States to administer the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and served as a real-world data source that informed global vaccination strategy. IDF Connection
Sheba is located on the Tel HaShomer military base and historically functioned as the IDF's primary medical facility. While it now operates as a civilian institution under the Israeli Ministry of Health, the military connection persists — Sheba handles complex trauma cases and provides specialized care for IDF personnel, and the campus houses military medical research units.
