The Jerusalem Light Rail is the Jerusalem metropolitan light-rail network. The Red Line — the original line linking Pisgat Ze'ev in the north to Mount Herzl in the southwest, with extensions to Hadassah Ein Kerem — opened in 2011 after a politically contested construction period.
Two expansion lines are now in active construction and partial operation: the Green Line, which connects Gilo in the south to Mount Scopus and Hebrew University in the north, and the Blue Line, which traces an east-west corridor and is designed to integrate with the future high-speed rail station and the airport corridor. Together the three-line network represents one of the largest urban transportation expansions ever executed in Israel.
Construction and operation are coordinated through CityPass (the Red Line concession) and additional consortia for the Green and Blue lines. The system is a comparable infrastructure peer to the Tel Aviv Metro and the NTA-managed inter-city rail upgrades.
