ICL Group

Israeli multinational specialty minerals and chemicals company built on the Dead Sea mineral concession. Dual-listed on NYSE (ICL) and TASE. World's largest bromine producer and top-five global potash producer.

ICL Group is an Israeli multinational specialty minerals and chemicals company. Listed on both the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ICL), the company is built on Israel's Dead Sea mineral concession and operates globally across fertilizers, specialty phosphates, bromine compounds, and industrial minerals.

Origin and Structure

ICL traces its origins to Dead Sea Works (established 1952) and the broader Israeli chemicals industry developed in the decades after independence. The company was privatized in the 1990s and consolidated under the Israel Corporation — the Ofer family's holding company — which remains its controlling shareholder. ICL is organized into four divisions: Industrial Products (bromine and phosphorus-based flame retardants and biocides), Potash (potassium chloride for agriculture), Phosphate Solutions (food-grade and technical phosphates), and Growing Solutions (specialty fertilizers).

Dead Sea Concession

ICL's competitive advantage starts with its Dead Sea mineral extraction rights. The Dead Sea brine is one of the world's richest natural sources of potash, bromine, and magnesium — minerals that ICL extracts through solar evaporation ponds at Sodom, near the southern basin. This natural resource base gives ICL structural cost advantages in potash and bromine production. The concession — its terms, renewal, and environmental conditions — is a recurring subject of Israeli public policy debate.

Global Operations

ICL operates mines, production facilities, and commercial offices in Israel, Europe, North America, South America, India, and China. It employs approximately 12,000 people worldwide. The company is the world's largest producer of bromine and a top-five global potash producer. Its specialty phosphate division supplies ingredients to food, pharma, and industrial customers globally.

Strategic Significance

ICL is one of a small number of Israeli companies built on physical natural resource extraction rather than software or defense technology. It represents the industrial side of the Israeli economy — capital-intensive, export-driven, and deeply connected to government concession policy and environmental regulation. The company's pivot toward specialty and precision nutrition products reflects the broader shift in Israeli industry toward higher-value, technology-enabled segments.
