Talpiot is the elite training and academic program of the Israel Defense Forces, established in 1979. Cadets enter at age 18 after passing one of the most selective screening processes in the Israeli educational system, complete a three-year undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics, and computer science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and serve an extended military commitment of approximately nine years in technology-related units. Cohorts are approximately 40–50 cadets per year.
Why it matters. Talpiot alumni occupy senior positions across Israel's defense research-and-development establishment, the elite intelligence units, and the country's deep-tech founder ranks. The program is one of the three principal pipelines — alongside Unit 8200 and Unit 81 — that have fed the Israeli technology economy with technical talent across cybersecurity, semiconductors, autonomous systems, and AI.
