Generali's Israeli operations dated to the pre-state Mandate period. The Italian insurer maintained a substantial Israeli book — life, property, and commercial insurance — through an Israeli subsidiary. The separation of Migdal from Generali occurred through a series of transactions in the 1990s and 2000s that left Migdal as an independent Israeli-listed company. Generali retained minority interests that have since been largely divested. The Generali connection is historically significant: Generali's European insurance operations before and during World War II involved substantial portfolios held by European Jewish policyholders, many of whom were murdered in the Holocaust. Generali's handling of those claims became one of the most contentious insurance-restitution disputes of the late 20th century.
Current Position
Migdal competes for the same Israeli institutional-capital mandates as Harel, Phoenix, Menora Mivtachim, and Clal. The five companies collectively manage the majority of Israeli pension savings, provident funds, and insurance reserves — making them the most consequential group of institutional investors in the Israeli economy outside the commercial banks.
